Before preparing an application from Chicago, we first need to understand your family relationships and the citizenship status of each relevant generation.
The process often begins with a Spanish long-form birth certificate or another document that identifies the Spanish ancestor.
At Díaz & Asociados, we can:
we analyze your family relationships, dates of birth and citizenship history.
we search the appropriate Civil Registry, municipality, parish or historical archive when certificates are missing.
we identify where each certificate must be requested and how it needs to be authenticated.
we compare records across generations before they are submitted.
where Spanish authorities require an official translation, we explain the appropriate format.
we organize the documentary chain and the legal basis supporting the case.
where the procedure allows it, we manage actions from Spain.
where included in our engagement, we help address requests to correct or complete the file.
we explain registration and swearing-in requirements when they apply.
Our role is to make sure the legal route and the evidence supporting it are aligned before the case is filed.
A legal team by your side, no matter the distance.
Díaz & Asociados does not have a physical office in Chicago.
We work directly from Spain and assist U.S. clients by video call. For a Spanish citizenship case, much of the legal and documentary work concerns Spanish authorities, Spanish registries and Spanish law.
Depending on your residence and legal route, you may also need to deal with the Consulate General of Spain in Chicago. Its current jurisdiction covers Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. Check the official jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Spain in Chicago.
We review the competent authority before preparing the file so you know what can be handled remotely and which actions require your personal attendance. Our work concerns Spanish citizenship and Spanish law. If you need advice about your immigration status in the United States, you should consult a U.S.-licensed immigration professional.
Chicago cases often involve documents issued by several different states or family histories reconstructed across multiple generations.
A birth in Illinois and a marriage in Wisconsin are separate records issued by different authorities.
For documents intended for use in Spain, state-issued records normally need to be authenticated through the state that issued them. The U.S. Department of State explains the distinction between state and federal documents for apostille purposes. See the U.S. Department of State guidance on apostilles.
This means you cannot assume that one state will authenticate a certificate issued by another. We identify the issuing authority and the correct authentication route before you order additional copies.
Immigration, marriage, legal name changes and registry errors can result in different versions of the same person’s name.
A Spanish surname may lose an accent, two surnames may become one, or a first name may be anglicized.
These differences do not automatically invalidate a case, but they may need to be explained or corrected before filing.
Census records, immigration documents and family trees can be useful for locating an ancestor.
They do not normally replace the civil or parish documents required to prove the legal family chain.
We use those secondary sources as clues to identify the correct person and locate the records that can support the application.
Spanish citizenship through family ties can arise through several different provisions.
The principal rules are contained in the Spanish Civil Code. Consult the current Spanish Civil Code on the BOE website.
Common situations include:
Your father or mother was Spanish when you were born: Article 17 may mean that you are Spanish by origin.
Your father or mother was originally Spanish and born in Spain: Article 20 may provide a right of option.
You were born outside Spain and your father, mother, grandfather or grandmother was originally Spanish: Article 22 may reduce the required legal residence period in Spain to one year, provided the other requirements are met. The one-year residence route requires residence that is legal, continuous and immediately prior to the application.
A Spanish great-grandparent or more distant ancestor does not automatically create a direct citizenship right. The intermediate generations must first be analyzed.
You can find a more detailed explanation in our guide to Spanish citizenship by descent, as well as our separate content on Spanish great-grandparents and dual citizenship between Spain and the United States.
We normally divide the work into five stages.
We review the family history, relevant citizenships and existing documents.
We identify missing certificates in Spain and the United States and determine where each one must be requested.
We review names, dates, apostilles and translations and organize the documentary chain.
We prepare the case according to the competent Spanish authority and the route being used.
Where included in our engagement, we monitor official communications and help respond to requests for additional or corrected evidence.
For residence-based citizenship, the Spanish Ministry of Justice provides the official application procedure and requirements. See the official citizenship-by-residence information.

Timing varies from case to case. A missing Spanish certificate, a correction to a U.S. record, an apostille or a consular appointment can all extend the process. We provide realistic estimates based on the work we can control rather than promising a fixed final date. Before starting, we also explain what our fee includes and which external costs or additional services would require separate approval.

Online ConsultationIf another family member has already obtained Spanish citizenship, their registration or decision may also help us understand the family chain. You do not need every document before contacting us.
No. Díaz & Asociados works directly from Spain and assists clients in Chicago and the Midwest by video call and remote document exchange.
It depends on the legal route. Some procedures can involve the Spanish consulate and may require personal appearances. Citizenship by residence requires the applicant to complete the applicable period of legal residence in Spain.
The cost depends on the scope of the case, the number of documents that need to be located, the jurisdictions involved and whether corrections or additional work are necessary. We define the scope and fees before starting.
We begin with names, approximate dates, places and the certificates available in later generations. Those details help us narrow the search and identify the relevant Spanish Civil Registry, parish or historical archive.
